Jujutsu Kaisen: Why did Toji kill himself?

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 has been an exhilarating journey till now, much like a rollercoaster ride. The Shibuya Incident arc is the talk of the hour as it brings new twists and turns to the narrative with each new episode. 

As such, in season 2 episode 16 of the anime series, one of the recent episodes, a fight between Toji and Megumi breaks out. It is an intense battle, keeping fans on their toes. However, fans watch in absolute awe as Toji kills himself at the end, considering he is supposed to be one of the most formidable antagonists of the show. The episode witnessed two major brawls unfolding, of which Sukuna vs Jogo was quite anticipated. However, the other clash featured a poignant reunion between Toji Fushiguro and his son, Megumi Fushiguro. It so happened that the father-son encounter captivated viewers with the fight’s unforeseen outcome. Toji’s decision to end himself sparks speculation among fans. However, a better look at his origins and past interactions with Satoru Gojo provides clarity. 

Did Toji sacrifice himself?

Toji, who had sold Megumi to the Zenin Clan due to complex circumstances, never sought him out before dying years ago. When Megumi encounters his estranged father in Shibuya, he is forced to face him in a battle forced upon him. Naturally, there was a vast difference in their powers and strength. But, Toji opts to end his own life as memories from the past flood back. 

What transpires is a revelation that Toji had sold his son years ago. Delving into the details, a whole new plot is unveiled. Toji, who was thought to be dead twelve years prior, was summoned through a séance by Granny Ogami during the Shibuya Incident. In a state of massacre, Megumi reveals his name as “Fushiguro” instead of Zenin.

Years ago, Toji requested Gojo for him to take care of Megumi. Toji’s trust in Gojo finds confirmation on the battlefield. When he finds out that Megumi remains free and has chosen his path outside of the Zenin Clan, it becomes an emotional motivation for Toji’s willingness to sacrifice himself.

With narratives such as this, Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 has become a whirlwind experience and has naturally raised future expectations of the show.
