Johnny Depp’s City Of Lies Pulled From Release By the Studio

Johnny Depp’s City of Lies won’t be getting a September 7th release date after all

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnny Depp’s crime thriller City of Lies won’t be getting a theatrical release after all. The film stars Depp as disgraced cop Russell Poole, who’s haunted by one unsolved case: the murders of rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. It was directed by Brad Furman (The Infiltrator) from a script by Christian Contreras, based on the book by Randall Sullivan.

City of Lies had been set for a September 7th release, but the studio, Global Road, has pulled the film from its schedule. At this point, no plans for a new release date have been announced.

No official reason was given, though the currently low public opinion of Depp has apparently made getting the film publicity difficult. The actor was recently the subject of a damaging profile piece recently published by Rolling Stone. Additionally, a crewmember on City of Lies claims Depp punched him twice, then lost his job when he refused to promise that he wouldn’t sue over the matter.

Assuming that City of Lies remains in purgatory, Depp will be seen next in the upcoming Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts: the Crimes of Grindelwald. Depp had made a surprise appearance in costume as Grindelwald during a San Diego Comic-Con panel last month to help promote the film.
