Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg Eye Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain

Taking a break from the enormous budgets of films like his recent Transformers: Dark of the Moon, director Michael Bay plans to tackle the $20 million-range Pain and Gain as his next feature. Today, Variety reports that Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg are both set up to potentially star.

A passion project for Bay planned for over a decade, Pain and Gain is based on the true story of a group of bodybuilders who get caught up in a criminal enterprise in Florida. In the past, Bay has likened the tone of the film to that of Fargo.

Both actors are far from signed and likely have to find some way to work around their busy upcoming schedules. Johnson will soon appear in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and G.I. Joe: Retaliation with production having just started on Snitch and soon for Fast Six. Wahlberg, meanwhile, will star in next year’s Contraband and Ted and is now shooting Broken City.
