Rednecks are Still Rape-y, Violent Jerks in Straw Dogs Trailer

The remake of Sam Peckinpah’s classic

I’ve avoided covering the Straw Dogs remake here on Shock because I never thought it was a good fit. The original is a classic and I’d hardly call it “horror.” But the redo, by Rod Lurie, is playing up the scares.

The thing I find interesting about this is that the antagonists remain good ol’ boys. That can’t be changed for the 21st century? Also, James Marsden is the nerdy husband this time around (Dustin Hoffman played the role in the original). Couldn’t the angle change here? From nerdy to effeminate, perhaps? Make it a reflection of the girlie men that have permeated pop culture and turn them into vicious killers? I also have to question, when these fellas dominate Bosworth’s character…is she going to resist then love it? I think they’re going to spin that another way.

Not thrilled about any of this, but check out the trailer from Coming Soon.

In the September 16 release, David and Amy Sumner (Marsden and Kate Bosworth), a Hollywood screenwriter and his actress wife, return to her small hometown in the deep South to prepare the family home for sale after her father’s death. Once there, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, including Amy’s ex-boyfriend Charlie (Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd), leading to a violent confrontation.
