CS Video: Gemma Arterton on The Disappearance of Alice Creed

In the last few months, Gemma Arterton has been everywhere, and ComingSoon.net has been fortunate enough to be in her delightful presence to talk about her big budget studio flicks, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Clash of the Titans.

Even so, the movie we’ve been dying to talk to her about is J. Blakeson’s The Disappearance of Alice Creed, a British indie thriller in which she plays the title role, a socialite kidnapped by two ex-convicts when spends the next 24 hours completely screwing with their plans. Of course, there’s a lot more to the relationship of these three characters then may be obvious from that premise, but part of what makes Blakeson’s first movie so riveting is the number of shocking twists and the visual style he brings to telling a story that’s essentially just three actors interacting in two rooms.

As much as we love Gemma Arterton as Tamina and Io in her more prominent 2010 movies (and who can forget her as Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace?), it’s her daring emotional performance in Blakeson’s film that has really blown us away, so we were thrilled to have a chance to sit down with her for an exclusive video interview.

Here’s some of the things we talked about:

* How she found the script and what sold her on doing the movie

* How she convinced J. she was the right actress for the role

* How she knew J. could make a movie with three actors and two locations visually interesting

* Whether it worried her that J had spent so much time figuring out how to kidnap someone

* What the experience was like to be on such an intense shoot

* Whether or not she figured out some sort of backstory from before Alice’s kidnapping

* Whether she’s seen the movie with an audience

* The response the movie has gotten since the Toronto Film Festival

* Working with Stephen Frears on “Tamara Drew” (at this year’s Toronto Film Festival)

* Whether she’s heard anything more about starting on the sequel to “Clash of the Titans” but she says she hasn’t even heard about who is directing

And more!

The Disappearance of Alice Creed opens in select cities on Friday, August 6. You can read our previous interview with writer/director J. Blakeson here.
