Charlize Theron Knows Nothing about a ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Sequel

Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the best films of the year. If you disagree with that, I’m sorry, I can’t hear you… That said, the film isn’t a massive financial boon for Warner Bros. as it has only made $368 million worldwide on a $150 million budget. Hopefully the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release will be large enough for WB to see value in the future of the franchise. That said, writer/director George Miller previously said there is “more Max to come” with the sequel being titled Mad Max: The Wasteland. That news, however, is news to Fury Road star Charlize Theron.

“What’s Wasteland? This is all news to me,” Theron said in an interview with USA Today in response to a question asking if she was signed on for the film. “I have not heard anything like that.”

Of course, there is no real timeline in the world of Mad Max as we can speculate where everything fits, but in the end each installment is meant to be its own entity. Perhaps Miller didn’t write a sequel with Theron’s Furiosa in mind. Hell, I wonder if he even realized how powerful her character would be when he was writing the film. For a movie titled Mad Max: Fury Road it’s not a stretch to say it’s more about Furiosa and her five wives than it is about Tom Hardy‘s Max who is, more or less, just along for the ride.

Either way, I think I speak for most when I say it would be fun to return to this world, though at the same time I’m more than content with what we have. We often tend to support the sequel ideas we like while lamenting the others as if one or the other is any less a ploy to simply make more money. That said, it seems quite clear Miller has plenty envisioned when it comes to the scorched world of Max as he not only released graphic novels alongside Fury Road, but also said the delays in the production allowed for more writing. “We’ve got one screenplay and a novella,” Miller has said. “It happened because with the delays [on Fury Road], and writing all the backstories, they just expanded.”
