New ‘Minions’ Trailer is Really Long and a Bit Meh

I like the little yellow minions that run around speaking gibberish in the Despicable Me movies. In fact, I said as much as the opening line in Minions movie I can’t say I was particularly moved to laughter. In fact, not even a chuckle. Is this simply a case of too much of a good thing?

Set to hit theaters on July 10, the Minions movie is set 42 years before the little yellow guys came under the employ of Gru (Steve Carell) and this trailer gives an idea of the multitude of villains they served since prehistoric times only to now find them serving Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock). I can only imagine at the end of this one Scarlet’s plans will be thwarted and Gru will make a quick appearance, but in the end, is it going to be any good?

I’m sure the folks at Illumination realize you can’t have a movie that is largely filled with gibberish. It works (for me at least) in the Despicable Me films because it’s kept at a minimum, a comedic interlude and bit of supporting humor to the overall plot. It certainly won’t work for the entirety of an entire film, which, I guess, is why the likes of Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Steve Coogan also lend their voices to this one. Though, after a nearly three minute and 30 second trailer I wasn’t laughing all that much, though comedy is difficult to deliver in fits and storms, it needs context and perhaps a lack of laughter at the trailer is a good thing as there really is little to no context.

Either way, give the trailer a peek and see what you think.
