Michelle MacLaren Out as ‘Wonder Woman’ Director

Well, it looks like another woman will no longer be directing a superhero film. First, Patty Jenkins (Monster) was all set up to direct Thor 2 but left due to “creative differences.” “Game of Thrones” director Alan Taylor ended up taking the position. Another director from that same show, Michelle MacLaren, was going to take on DC’s Wonder Woman, but she has stepped off from the project as well for, you guessed it, “creative differences.”

The official statement from the studio was:

Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together.

Fairly standard stuff here. I just find it very odd that the two women who have officially signed on to direct these big superhero movies have both dropped out of their positions. This one is particularly surprising, given MacLaren’s familiarity with the more fantastical side of things, as she was definitely one of the best “Thrones” directors, in my opinion.

There is no word yet on who will take up the mantle from MacLaren, but Gal Gadot is still signed on to play the titular hero. I wish MacLaren the best with what her feature film debut ends up being, and I hope Warner Bros. selects a suitable replacement. The first female led superhero film deserves some creative pedigree.
