It’s no surprise “Arrested Development” will live to see another day. Netflix wants it back, show creator Mitchell Hurwitz left his fourth season open-ended for that particular reason and fans are more or less interested to see it return. The real question has been how it’s coming back? Speculation hints between a fifth season or a feature film as the next move, and while Hurwitz and Netflix have yet to confirm anything, executive producer Brian Grazer comes out of the woodwork to say a new 17-episode season is coming soon.
During a conversation on Bill Simmons’ ‘B.S. Report’ podcast on Grantland, Grazer began to talk about the fans and impact of the show, and let details on a new season slip in the process.
“It was never a huge thing. But people are loyal to it, and we’re going to do another 17 episodes. So stay tuned for ‘Arrested Development’,” he said.
The conversation switched to “Empire” so that’s the end of his input on the matter. There’s no information on when it’s going to happen, if everyone’s set to return or when it would be released. Although, anyone who watched this past season can guess what direction the program will likely head towards.
It seems everyone is on board in some way or another. While the primary performers are busier than ever, they all want to keep “Arrested Development” alive. What’s most interesting is how confident Grazer is in his comments. Everyone has been mostly wishy-washy about where things were headed, but the executive producer seems assured this new season is set for the near future.
Personally, while I still mostly enjoyed season four, the individual storylines did take away from the fun of the original three seasons, and the use of green screens throughout often made “Arrested Development” look uglier than it needed to be. Hopefully this is not in the cards again. Hurwitz himself seemed more interested in continuing the story in a film so the whole cast could come on board and work alongside each other. It’s possible, of course, he changed his mind.
