First Look at Timothy Spall in Mike Leigh’s J.M.W. Turner Project

Just above is the first look at Timothy Spall in Mike Leigh‘s upcoming, Untitled Turner Project, movie centered on J.M.W. Turner, a British Romantic landscape painter, water-colorist, and printmaker. The film is set to hit theaters next year and I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes its premiere at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival considering the timing of this photo.

The press release accompanying the image doesn’t give us any additional information on the film, the plot or the cast and only refers to the movie as Untitled 13. The film is currently in post-production in London with Sony Pictures Classics set as the domestic distributor.

Leigh was quoted previously saying, “Turner as a character is compelling. I want to explore the man, his working life, his relationships and how he lived. But what fascinates me most is the drama that lies in the tension between this driven eccentric and the epic, timeless world he evoked in his masterpieces. I also see rich tragic-comic potential in his often turbulent relationship with the English Art Establishment, especially in his later years, when his increasingly radical work was misunderstood and derided.”
