Last year, Wally Pfister (Inception) became only the tenth recipient of the American Society of Cinematographers’ (ASC) award for outstanding cinematography in a feature film to go on to win the Oscar after 25 years of the organization handing out the award. Tonight, with Emmanuel Lubezki winning for The Tree of Life, I have a feeling next year those stats will read 11 for the last 26 years.
Lubezki is the current front-runner to win Best Cinematography at the Oscars and while the stats say otherwise I can only imagine this helps his chances to take home the Academy Award.
Lubezki was up against Guillaume Schiffman (The Artist), Jeff Cronenweth (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Robert Richardson (Hugo) and Hoyte van Hoytema (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) for tonight’s award and among that group only van Hotema isn’t nominated for an Oscar as Janusz Kaminski took that final slot for his work on Steven Spielberg’s War Horse.
Should Lubezki go on to win the Oscar it would be his first Oscar win after four previous nominations.
Winners in the night’s other categories are all listed below and I have already updated the “Oscar Overture” with Lubezki’s win and he remains at the top of my Oscar predictions.
