If you ask me this is spectacular news as Warner Bros. has just issued a press release announcing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I will be released only in 2D in both conventional and IMAX theaters as completed 3D versions of the film will not be ready in time for the film’s release. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know this has everything to do with the poorly received rushed conversion of Clash of the Titans earlier this year from WB as well as the negative reaction to Paramount’s releasing of The Last Airbender in an equally rushed, poor 3D format. The last thing Warner Bros. wants to do is destroy their golden egg franchise.
Producer David Heyman was quoted saying, “For 10 years, we have worked alongside Alan Horn and the studio, whose priority has always been to preserve the integrity of Jo Rowling’s books as we have adapted them to the screen, and this decision reflects that commitment.”
However, on July 15, 2011, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II will be released in both 2D and 3D formats. There is no word on whether the studio will issue a re-release of Part I at that time in 3D but I’d bet on that happening. No way they’re spending the money to convert some of it and not the rest.
Part I will be released on November 19, 2010 as planned.
