Warner Bros. Picks Up the Rights for a Lego-Based Movie

With film proposals out there such as boardgame adaptations from “Candyland” to “Monopoly” and this summer’s toy-fetish with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra I guess we shouldn’t be at all surprised Warner Bros. has secured the rights for a movie built around Lego brand building blocks. Then again, maybe we should really start to get worried.

Word out of Variety is Dan and Kevin Hageman are penning the script for the project that will mix live action and animation. Warner is keeping the plot under wraps.

Dan Lin, who is also producing a “Tom and Jerry” film that will put the feuding animated characters in a live-action setting, is aboard to shepherd the project at Warner Bros with Roy Lee and Doug Davison producing through their Vertigo banner.

There is one way I see this film being interesting and it would depend on how the rights work with Lego and all the movie-themed Lego games and toys out there. As Marc Graser at Variety points out, Warner Bros. already has a relationship with Lego through TT Games, the video game publisher that the studio bought in 2007, and produces the popular “Lego Star Wars,” “Lego Indiana Jones,” “Lego Batman” and soon “Lego Rock Band” titles. Should they somehow be able to tap into a story idea involving the Legos from a variety of film, comic and pop culture genres getting mixed up together there could be something to this.

Basically, I am thinking Toy Story, but with toys we already recognize. Perhaps Lego Batman has to face-off against Lego Darth Vader while Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Princess Leia sing a little Lego Rock Band while Lego Han Solo gets jealous, but finds something strangely familiar about his competition… Just brainstorming here… What do you think?
