USA Today has posted two interview pieces and a batch of new images from the upcoming children’s book adaptation Where the Wild Things Are from director Spike Jonze, which will see its first official trailer in front of Monsters vs. Aliens this coming Friday, March 27.
The two articles are interview pieces, one with Jonze and the other with Max Records, the young boy who plays the lead character also named Max in the filmed adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s 1963 storybook classic.
The piece on Records is a bit of a puff piece that doesn’t necessarily do much to detail the film, but the Jonze article is actually quite informative for those who are interested in the adaptation. On why he likes Sendack’s story so much he told USA Today, “As a kid, I just connected to it. I wanted to hear it over and over. It’s like trying to explain why you love somebody. To me, the Wild Things are both cuddly and dangerous. I wanted to climb atop of them like Max.”
Sendak added input to the script which would turn his 338-word children’s story into a feature film as Jonze and co-writer Dave Eggers set to work, but Jonze says Sendak “was adamant that [Jonze] make [his] own thing.”
Apparently script additions include details about Max’s home life that shed light on why he felt the need to run off to a magical place. There is much more to read so if you are interested click here.
As for the images, they are all featured below and can be viewed at USA Today in a Flash slideshow with captions and descriptions right here.
Where the Wild Things Are hits theaters on October 16, for more on the film click here.
