Rudd, Carell and Roach Ready to Serve ‘Dinner for Schmucks’

Last time I remember hearing about the Jay Roach directed feature Dinner for Schmucks was back in September 2007 when Sacha Baron Cohen was attached to star. The film, which is a remake of French hit Le Diner de cons, found itself bouncing around while DreamWorks and Paramount sorted out their divorce and it seems like it is now ready to go with Roach still at the helm, but Cohen is now gone with Steve Carell and Paul Rudd set to star.

The film features a Paris publisher who urges his friends to invite the most pathetic people possible to his weekly dinner party. In the English-language remake the film centers on one guest so full of “schmuckiness” he ruins the lives of anyone who comes into his orbit. Cohen was expected to play the guest and I can only assume Carell will step into the role.

Paramount, DreamWorks and Spyglass are all set to offer up financial help for the film to get off the ground.

In other Steve Carell news, he is set to star in Hi-T for Warner bros., a comedy revolving around a man dealing with uncontrollable mood swings after an injury forces him to take testosterone injections. Kim Barker (License to Wed) is working on the script.
