BlackFilm.com has learned directly from director John Singleton that he is taking over directorial reigns from Carl Franklin on Tulia, a film that will reunite Monsters Ball stars Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton. Monsters Ball was the film that awarded Halle with her undeserved Oscar, and then she went on to make the classic comic adaptation Catwoman.
Tulia is an adaptation of the Nate Blakeslee book “Tulia: Race, Cocaine, and Corruption in a Small Texas Town” about an ACLU lawyer’s efforts to expose a corrupt and racially motivated rash of drug convictions in rural Tulia, Texas, in 1999.
Karen Croner wrote the script, and Franklin did a rewrite. Shooting will take place in Texas.
