Mini-Review:

Making a movie based on Tinker Bell was a great idea. Tink has always been cool and she had a whole background that had been unexplored all these years. But Disney has had a horrible track record with their animated sequels and even worse with their direct to DVD films. When John Lassiter came on board at Disney, the film was delayed which was either a bad sign that it sucked or a good sign that it was being retooled. So how was the final result?

When you look at Tink in “Peter Pan,” what do you think would have been her job in the fairy world? Would you believe… engineer? Yup, the writers took Tinker Bell’s name literally and made her a tinkerer. Her forte is designing and building machines. Not exactly what I would have expected. Unfortunately, her character is a bit diluted in the process. She doesn’t seem like the Tink that would have pulled a knife on someone, would have been jealous of Wendy, or would have admired her figure in a mirror. She’s no longer the sassy hothead from “Peter Pan.” She’s… well, pretty much like every other Disney princess that they’ve offered us. She’s sweet, cute, and determined to follow her heart. Bleh. The only time she’s remotely interesting is when she’s screwing up, and thankfully it happens several times. The best scene in the film is when she unsuccessfully tries to coax a baby bird out of the nest to learn to fly. I wish the rest of the film was as good as that.

Fortunately, the world Tink lives in is interesting. The animators have done a fine job merging the fairy world with nature. From the costumes to the gadgets, it’s pretty imaginative. Her friends are interesting, too. While they’re kind of a PC lineup of races and a predictable mix of colors (red, blue, yellow, orange, purple, etc.), they have engaging personalities. This comes out best in scenes where Tink tries out other roles in fairy world. They’re voiced by an interesting cast including America Ferrera, Lucy Liu, and Raven-Symoné.

“Tinker Bell” isn’t as good as it could have been, but it isn’t a disaster either. Little girls will love it and parents should be interested in seeing a character they grew up with explored in more depth. There are some good story opportunities with these characters. Hopefully now that they have the origin story out of the way they can do something really cool with the sequel, “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure.”

There aren’t a lot of bonus features on this DVD. You’ll find a ‘making of’ featurette, a few deleted scenes, and a music video. For the kids there’s a guide to fairy world.
