Lionsgate Plans Cube Remake, Cubed

A remake of Vincenzo Natali’s 1997 science fiction thriller Cube is in the works at Lionsgate. The Hollywood Reporter broke news of the project, bringing word that the new feature is being developed under the title Cubed. Newcomer Saman Kesh, best known for his recent short film “Controller,” will direct from a screenplay by Philip Gawthorne.

Written by Natali alongside André Bijelic and Graeme Manson, the original Cube stars Nicole de Boer, Nicky Guadagni, David Hewlet, Andrew Miller, Julian Richings, Wayne Robson and Maurice Dean Wint as seven complete strangers who find themselves mysteriously trapped in a maze-like prison that forces them to navigate a series of deadly puzzles to hopefully gain their freedom and find out what has brought them together in the first place.

Cube was followed by both a sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube, in 2002, and a prequel, Cube Zero, in 2004.

Cubed will be produced by How to Train Your Dragon and The LEGO Movie‘s Roy Lee alongside Prometheus and The Darkest Hour scribe John Spaihts.

In the player below, you can watch Kesh’s full short in which, in Kesh’ own words, “A girl that can control everything perpetrates her own rescue by taking control of her boyfriend.” Kesh is also attached to develop a feature film version of Controller at 20th Century Fox.
