FOX and DC Entertainment have announced that Tom Ellis (âMiranda,â âRushâ) has been cast in the title role of the upcoming âLuciferâ series, based on the Vertigo title by Mike Carey.Â
The TV series centers on Lucifer, who, bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals. âSleepy Hollowâ co-creator and Underworld director Len Wiseman will helm the pilot episode which has Jerry Bruckheimer as an executive producer.
Largely inspired by John Miltonâs approach to the character in âParadise Lost,â this version of Lucifer first appeared in Neil Gaimanâs âSandmanâ (itself in the process of heading to the big screen). Carey expanded the character into a solo title in 2000. The popular series was published through 2006 and ran 75 issues.
âLuciferâ joins the ever-growing slate of small screen DC Comics adaptations, including âArrow,â âThe Flash,â and âGotham,â the upcoming âiZombie,â and the in-development âSupergirlâ, âKrypton,â and âTitans.â
