Mini-Review:

If you’re a “Heroes” fan, you probably already know that you want to add this DVD to your collection. If you’ve never seen “Heroes” before, then this is your chance to catch up on all the fun.

I have to admit that it took me a little while to warm up to “Heroes.” I thought the pilot was OK, but nothing spectacular. I figured the series had potential and I’d stick with it. I was glad I did. I think I was thoroughly hooked by the third episode which featured a shocking cliffhanger. It was cool, gory, and unlike anything I’d seen on TV for a while. If you’re not hooked by then, I don’t think you will be.

As an established fan revisiting some of the earlier episodes, I noticed a number of things I had forgotten. I got to see some of the characters that were killed in earlier episodes (and there were a lot). I saw some of the characters that were basically discarded along the way. I also saw some plot points that still haven’t been resolved (the eclipse?). In short the series is worth revisiting, especially with the cast commentaries and extra deleted scenes. It’s also interesting to see the writers and actors hitting their stride.

If you’re into sci-fi or comic books, then this is required viewing. If you like “Lost,” this will probably be of interest to you, too, since it’s another sci-fi based drama with a huge ensemble cast.

As you might expect with a genre DVD, there are a ton of bonus features included here. First up is a 73 minute version of the pilot episode. It features an alternate character that was discarded as well as other goodies. This was originally only shown at the San Diego Comic-Con. You’ll also find 50 deleted scenes. Some are quite brief while others are a bit more significant. A couple of them feature scenes where various characters meet for the first time. Others feature throw away lines that, if included, give significantly different backgrounds for some of the characters.

A bunch of behind the scenes featurettes are also included. They have your usual cast and crew interviews, footage without special effects, and other such stuff. They cover the creation of the show, the special effects, the stunts, the score, and the artwork by Tim Sale. You’ll also find a “Matt Parkman” mind reader game. But some of the big fun is in the audio commentaries featuring the cast and crew. It’s a geek-tasic way to enjoy the old episodes all over again as the actors talk about the shows and offer all sorts of trivia along the way.
