The upcoming Gundam movie featuring Sydney Sweeney has received a long-awaited update. The live-action film will be distributed by Netflix and joins the streamer’s growing Gundam lineup following its acquisition of the franchise’s streaming rights in 2021.
What is the update on Sydney Sweeney’s live-action Gundam movie?
The Gundam movie, featuring Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, has officially wrapped up its production. The film is now in post-production, although it does not yet have a release date.
The upcoming mecha movie is helmed by Jim Mickle, best known for writing and directing Sweet Tooth, Cold in July, and We Are What We Are. He also wrote the screenplay, based on the original story by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate.
The plot centers around Sweeney and Centineo’s characters, who play rival mech pilots caught in the midst of a decades-long outer-space war between Earth and its former space colonies. The movie also centers around the Romeo & Juliet theme.
According to What’s on Netflix, an earlier description of the movie reads, “As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity. With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s been seen before.”
Apart from the two leads, the movie also stars Shioli Kutsuna, Jackson White, Jason Isaacs, Nonso Anozie, Michael Mando, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, Javon Walton, Ida Brooke, and Gemma Chua-Tran.
The film is being developed by Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks, the latter of which is the studio behind the original anime series. Mickle also serves as a producer on the film alongside his wife, Linda Moran. The team also includes Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Ali Mendes, and Naohiro Ogata.
This will be the first live-action film for the mecha franchise, which dates back to 1979. Other Gundam content on Netflix includes Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance (2024) and Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway (2021), which are available for streaming on the platform.
