Melissa Gilbert’s time in Hope Valley has officially come to an end. The actress says she will not return when the Hallmark drama comes back. After appearing across two seasons of the long-running series, Gilbert confirmed her exit herself. While fans had hoped to see Georgie McGill again, the actress said the decision was not hers and shared the reason she was given for her departure.
Melissa Gilbert won’t be in When Calls the Heart for Season 14, here’s why
Melissa Gilbert revealed on Instagram that she will not appear in Season 14 of When Calls the Heart. Responding to repeated questions from fans, she wrote that the answer was simply “no,” adding that she had been told the decision came down to “budget issues.” Even so, she wished the cast and crew “a wonderful and successful season 14.”
Although her run on the series is ending, Gilbert looked back on the experience with gratitude. She thanked executive producer Michael Landon Jr. for giving her the opportunity to play Georgie McGill and called the role a joy over the past couple of seasons. Ending her farewell on an optimistic note, she wrote that “when one door closes, another one opens,” signaling she is already looking toward future projects.
Hallmark also confirmed that Gilbert’s storyline has wrapped up. In a statement, the network said Georgie McGill’s arc concluded during Season 13 and praised the actress, saying it is always grateful for the chance to work with her. Gilbert first joined the drama in Season 12 and continued making guest appearances throughout the following season (via EW).
Long before arriving in Hope Valley, Gilbert became a television icon through Little House on the Prairie, where she portrayed Laura Ingalls Wilder from 1974 to 1983. Over a career spanning decades, she has earned numerous honors, including multiple Young Artist Awards, a TV Land Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
