The latest episode of X-Men ’97 delivers major consequences for Wolverine‘s return to the Weapon X facility. The episode significantly raises the stakes as Season 2 continues to expand its Weapon X storyline.

Wolverine reforms Alpha Flight, but two mutants meet a tragic fate

Season 2, Episode 5 of X-Men ’97 sees Wolverine reunite with several familiar faces from his past for a dangerous return to the Weapon X facility. Believing Dr. Cornelius has resurfaced, Logan assembles his old Team X crew consisting of Lady Deathstrike, Garrison Kane, Maverick, and Sabretooth, with Morph joining along as a pilot. Their plan quickly falls apart after they discover the facility has already been consumed by a Brood infestation, with Cornelius no longer in control of his own body.

The team’s mission quickly turns into a battle for survival as the Brood launch a full-scale attack inside the base. During the confrontation, Wolverine is infected by one of the alien parasites, leaving the remaining members to fight for survival. The episode also brings Omega Red back into the story after he is found frozen inside the Weapon X complex, serving as an unlikely ally against the alien horde.

The operation ends in heavy losses, as Garrison Kane and Maverick are killed during the Brood assault, leaving Wolverine’s team unable to complete their mission.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 Episode 5 ending leaves Omega Red’s fate uncertain

The episode concludes with the battle at the Weapon X facility reaching its final stage after Wolverine’s team suffers the loss of Garrison Kane and Maverick. To save Logan, the remaining survivors lure the infected Wolverine into the facility’s bonding chamber to re-fuse the adamantium to his skeleton, successfully purging the alien parasite.

However, the survival-horror scenario leaves the ultimate fate of their temporary ally in the air. The episode stops short of confirming the fate of Omega Red, who remains unaccounted for in the chaotic aftermath inside the base. He is never shown dying or escaping, leaving the character’s future completely unresolved.

Given Omega Red’s regenerative abilities, the episode leaves open the possibility that he survived the terrifying ordeal. X-Men ’97 streams new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+.
