X-Men ’97 Introduces a Deadly Alien Wolverine, Reverses His Brutal Season 1 Twist

The latest episode of X-Men ’97 brings a major turning point for Wolverine. During his return to the Weapon X facility, Logan becomes the host of the deadly Brood, resulting in the creation of a powerful alien hybrid. The episode also reverses one of Season 1’s biggest cliffhangers.

X-Men ’97 just introduced The Brood Wolverine hybrid

Episode 5, “Weapon X, Lies, and DVDs,” follows Wolverine as he reunites with Morph, Lady Deathstrike, Maverick, Sabretooth, and Kane to investigate reports that Dr. Cornelius has resurfaced at the Weapon X facility. Upon entering the complex, the team discovers that the operation has already been overrun by the Brood, with Cornelius and the remaining scientists falling under the aliens’ control.

The mission takes a dramatic turn after Wolverine is infected by the Brood parasite. A dangerous alien race that survives by breeding with the strongest beings it encounters, the Brood uses Logan as its latest host. His healing factor allows the organism to evolve into a far more powerful creature than expected, creating an almost unstoppable Brood-Wolverine hybrid. The episode also brings Omega Red back into the story after he is discovered inside the Weapon X complex, ultimately acting as an unlikely ally against the alien horde after the Brood successfully kill Kane and Maverick.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 makes Wolverine whole again

After realizing they cannot defeat the hybrid through conventional means, Wolverine’s allies determine that subjecting him to the facility’s machinery is the only way to destroy the Brood organism. Logan steps into the Weapon X chamber, where his skeleton is fused with the indestructible metal as he undergoes the adamantium bonding process for a second time.

The procedure eliminates the alien parasite, restoring Wolverine to his normal self and regrowing the adamantium coating on his skeleton and claws. It reverses the damage caused when Magneto violently stripped the metal from Logan’s body during the Season 1 finale. The episode also pays tribute to classic X-Men comics, including a recreation of Marc Silvestri’s Uncanny X-Men #234 cover art when Logan is first infected.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 continues to follow the mutant team as they find themselves divided and thrown across different eras, while a rising strain of mutant intolerance grows in the 1990s. The season features the voices of Ross Marquand, Matthew Waterson, Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Cal Dodd, and JP Karliak, among others.
