A summer box office battle between two breakout horror hits has transfered on digital platforms. The A24’s liminal nightmare has unseated the supernatural thriller Obsession to become the most popular movie on digital right now.
Backrooms is the most popular movie on digital now
Obsession had been dominating the digital charts, riding high on its staggering $427 million worldwide theatrical gross. But the release of A24’s highest-grossing film of all time on digital on July 14 has reshuffled the rankings completely. The #1 movie on iTunes currently is Backrooms (via Pop Vortex). It officially landed on PVOD platforms like Apple TV and Prime Video after receiving just over 45 days of theater exclusivity.
Directed by Kane Parsons in his feature debut, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a furniture store owner who discovers a strange doorway in his basement. That discovery leads him into an inescapable, surreal dimension of liminal horror. Fans can rent the film digitally for $19.99 or purchase it outright for $24.99. Those hoping for bonus features, however, will need to wait. Digital purchases do not seemingly include extras like the extended cut recently shown in theaters. Parsons has reportedly promised that additional footage is coming to his Kane Pixels YouTube channel this week.
Obsession now sits in second place. The supernatural horror film, written and directed by Curry Barker, follows a guy with a crush who buys a cursed toy that grants a twisted wish. After the premiere, it became one of the highest-grossing movies of 2026.
Both films shared much of their theatrical runs, creating a summer dominated by young directors working in horror. Their simultaneous success proved audiences were hungry for original, director-driven scares. Now that same rivalry has moved to the home screen.
Interestingly, discussions around Obsession and Backrooms have continued to fuel fan theories and debate about the films’ ambiguous endings. That sustained online chatter kept the movies visible long after their theatrical window closed.
