Minions & Monsters Cut a Scene Answering Fans’ Burning Question About Minion Reproduction

Minions & Monsters cut an important scene that could have answered a long-standing question. The film is the newest installment in the franchise, but fans still do not know where exactly the Minions come from and how they reproduce.

What would the cut Minions & Monsters scene have shown regarding Minion reproduction?

In the 2015 Minions movie, the opening sequence shows the Minions evolving from single-celled organisms through various stages of evolution. Other Minions also appear as the evolutionary sequence progresses.

Although the recently released film received a good opening, a scene addressing this long-standing question was ultimately cut. Pierre Coffin, who directed the film and voices the Minions, originally envisioned a different opening for Minions & Monsters.

When asked about how Minions reproduce in an interview with Polygon, he stated, “That’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves at a highly creative level. It went really high up and then, ultimately, we thought that we would never answer that question. But we sort of hinted at it when we did the first Minion movie. In the opening credits, they start off as little yellow cells.”

He also revealed his original idea for the opening credits of Minions & Monsters, “I wanted it to start with the Big Bang and then out of the Big Bang came darkness and multiple little yellow dots. Then we’d follow these yellow dots going from planet to planet and then eventually come to this big blue thing that was kind of separating, so they helped the separation of the moon and what would become the Earth. Then those little yellow dots would come on Earth and populate the Earth. Basically, we were trying to say that the origin of this whole thing actually is the Minions.”

Unfortunately, according to Coffin, the idea was “deemed slightly off-subject” for the type of movie they were making. As a result, the entire sequence was removed during production. Thankfully, he has confirmed that this idea is shelved, as he said, “Maybe we’ll do it for some other Minion movie in the future.” This also opens up the possibility of a Despicable Me 5 or Minions 3.

The movie was co-directed by Patrick Delage and co-written by Brian Lynch, alongside Coffin. This movie follows the Minions to 1920s Hollywood in search of frightening creatures for their monster movie. They partner with a green creature and must save the planet after unleashing the monsters. Minions & Monsters is out in theaters now.
