Minions & Monsters: 1 Thing You Should Know Before You Watch

Minions & Monsters is now playing in theaters, and there are a few things audiences might want to know about the brand-new Minions movie before watching it in theaters.

Minions & Monsters is directed by Pierre Coffin, from a script written by Coffin and Brian Lynch. The movie features a litany of stars as well, including Coffin, Trey Parker, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeff Bridges, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, and Phil LaMarr.

“The film introduces us to an entirely new tribe of Minions, who find themselves in Hollywood at the dawn of cinema. Our heroes are two brand-new Minions: James and Henry,” reads the official synopsis of the film. “This is the rambunctious, ridiculous, and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world, and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.”

What should you know before watching Minions & Monsters?

The biggest thing to know about the upcoming Minions & Monsters is that, despite being a fun animated movie featuring the iconic group, there’s a lot to notice here if you’re a fan of movies.

The movie is packed with tons of references and Easter eggs to the history of Hollywood, and rightfully so given its setting. As the movie largely focuses on the Minions being placed in the 1920s right as silent films are going out of style, the movie does its best to show love to many movies that came before it.

The new movie features a litany of homages to movie monsters of the past including The Mummy, Clash of the Titans’ cyclops, Jaws, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and more. Legendary films like Citizen Kane, Casablanca, and Sunset Boulevard are also referenced throughout the movie, a clear nod to the history that Minions & Monsters is following in.

While not the focal point of the movie, the references add a nice touch to those who might be clued in on them. As is the case with most children’s movies, the references also give adults something to watch for too.
