Mark Hamill has revealed a surprising reason behind his decision to join Anthony Mackie‘s twisted series. The Star Wars icon admitted he simply could not understand the show he was signing up for.
Mark Hamill says he didn’t understand Twisted Metal Season 3 script
Mark Hamill, beloved worldwide for playing Luke Skywalker, will soon appear as Pope Charlie Kane in Season 3 of Peacock’s Twisted Metal. Speaking during a FAN EXPO Anaheim panel, the veteran actor confessed the script left him utterly baffled. Even after watching previous episodes, his confusion stayed rather than cleared.
“They sent me this script and I started reading this thing. I go, ‘What IS this?’ Yeah, it’s twisted, but I just didn’t get it,” Hamill said (via ScreenRant). “So they sent me a link to watch the episodes, and I watched the episodes, and I went, ‘I still don’t get it.’”
Despite his inability to grasp Twisted Metal Season 3’s premise, Mark Hamill decided to join the cast anyway. The role is his first collaboration with Anthony Mackie, who leads the series as delivery driver John Doe. Hamill said he was “delighted” to work alongside both Mackie and co-star Stephanie Beatriz.
The actor explained that his character’s disconnect from logic actually mirrors his own state of mind. Charlie Kane, described as “an ex-cabbie, ex-crook, and now the Pope of New York,” thrives on absurdity. Hamill embraced that wholeheartedly. “What’s so wonderful is, even though I don’t get it, my character benefits from not being tethered to reality,” he explained. “And I’m telling you, you put that hat on, it sort of changes you. And he’s nuts, totally nuts. So I’m having a great time.”
The recurring role places Hamill inside a post-apocalyptic world filled with marauders and a killer clown named Sweet Tooth. It is a universe that has steadily built a loyal audience since premiering in 2023.
