Warner Bros. acquires the rights to the book Shatter Me

Warner Bros. has reportedly obtained the rights to adapt Tahereh Mafi’s dystopian thriller novel, Shatter Me, according to Variety. This comes as the book celebrates its 15th anniversary.

Mafi has boarded the film, optioned for a theatrical release, as an executive producer. Producers include Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen from Temple Hill, Karen Rosenfelt of Sunswept Entertainment, and Kevin McCormick of Langley Park Pictures.

Shatter Me marks the first project under McCormick’s new producing deal with Warner Bros. As of this writing, with the project in early stages of development, a director, screenwriter, and cast members are not attached.

Ahead of the novel’s release in 2011, 20th Century Fox reportedly acquired the rights to adapt it. Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark were set to produce through the Chernin Entertainment banner. Meanwhile, Emma Watts, Peter Kang, and Daria Cercek assumed the task of overseeing its development.

The novel—the first in a series that includes seven books and five novellas—has gained widespread recognition within the BookTok community, having sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Moreover, it has been the subject of more than 500,000 social media posts with associated hashtags.

Shatter Me holds a unique presence in the literary world. This is because it deviates from the standard writing process, with printed text including scribbled-out lines and words. Accordingly, it resembles a diary more than a traditional book.

Following its launch, it has been published in 38 territories and translated into 34 languages. The story follows Juliette Ferrars, a teenage girl possessing the power of lethal touch, who goes up against an oppressive totalitarian regime named The Reestablishment.

Mafi confirmed in the above Instagram post that she will share more information on Thursday’s Shatter Me Summer Fest.
