Elijah Wood has shared his interest in bringing a long-dormant Lucasfilm franchise back to television. The actor believes the series still has plenty of potential decades after its debut.
His comments have revived interest in a franchise that first gained fans through comics and video games. The idea comes at a time when game adaptations continue to find success across film and television.
Why Elijah Wood thinks a Sam & Max TV reboot can still work
While promoting his work on Among Us, Elijah Wood spoke about another project he would love to see revived. During an interview with ScreenRant, the Emmy-nominated actor said he would like a television adaptation inspired by Sam & Max Hit the Road, the classic LucasArts game released in 1993. Wood said the title had “a really great art style,” adding that it “lent itself to an animated series.” Although he confirmed no plans are currently in place, he made clear that revisiting the franchise remains a dream.
Sam & Max actually started life as a comic by Dave Purcell before branching out into video games. The franchise follows Sam, a dog detective, and his chaotic rabbit sidekick, Max. Over the years, different studios took a crack at the series, with Telltale Games releasing three popular episodic seasons. For those not in the know, this isn’t the duo’s first trip to TV. The Adventures of Sam & Max: Freelance Police aired in the late ’90s and built up a cult fanbase despite lasting only one season. These days, fans can still catch the show on Tubi and Pluto TV.
Getting Sam & Max back on the screen might be easier said than done. The rights situation is complicated, and Lucasfilm Games has mostly been busy with heavy hitters like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. That said, the company has shown it still has a soft spot for classic franchises, backing projects like Return to Monkey Island and the long-awaited Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake.
Arcane, Devil May Cry, and the Sonic the Hedgehog movies have also proved that fans are more than ready for fresh takes on beloved gaming icons.
