In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays Dorothy and also serves as an executive producer, shared how she helped get the series greenlit. She revealed that she connected the literary agent of Patricia Cornwell, the author of the book the series is adapted from, with Jason Blum, the founder of Blumhouse Productions, through an email. She wrote in the email, “I’m introducing Esther here, let’s f**king go!” That’s how the process of bringing the series to fruition began.
Determined, Curtis also managed to secure rights to Cornwell’s book to develop the series. She said, “I called Patricia and said, ‘Who has the rights to Scarpetta right now?'” and she said, “No one.” I was so surprised that this incredible book series, with this fantastic lead character, had not been brought to the screen yet. I called Jason Blum and said, ‘I’d like to buy these books, and I would like to develop them for television.'” She also explained what makes Scarpetta stand out in the over-crowded thriller-crime genre. “What’s interesting about our show is that it’s a little bit of a hybrid, which is, it’s also an intense family drama in the midst of a forensic, procedural, crime-solving story,” she elaborated.
