Early reviews for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters have resulted in a lower Rotten Tomatoes score compared to its debut season. As critics share their first reactions, the latest installment of the MonsterVerse series has opened with a weaker rating than Season 1, drawing attention ahead of its upcoming premiere.

Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting wrote, “A thrilling, much more confident season that expands the MonsterVerse in exciting ways.”
Joonatan Itkonen of Region Free rated it 2/5, writing, “Monarch can’t help but find ways to disappoint. It is once more a series that can’t decide what kind of story it wants to tell, so it moves forward like an old car pumped full of bad gas.”
Tara Bennett of IGN Movies rated it 8/10 and stated, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 retains bragging rights as the Monsterverse project giving audiences the best balance of kaiju thrills and compelling storytelling involving its human characters.”
Jeremy Mathai of Slashfilm rated it 5/10, writing, “All the manufactured interpersonal conflicts, abrupt character turns, and frustratingly hidden motivations in the world are no substitute for a narrative that never manages to fully come together in a satisfying way.”
Rendy Jones of RogerEbert.com wrote, “It maintains the momentum of its predecessor, marking the best of the MonsterVerse TV series to date. But, like Godzilla’s atomic breath, it takes a while to charge up and deliver a powerful blast.”

Monarch Season 2 Rotten Tomatoes score isn’t as good as Season 1
Season 2’s 79% Tomatometer score is lower than Season 1’s 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Rotten Tomatoes has not posted a Popcornmeter score for the new season. Season 1 holds a 76% audience score based on more than 1,000 ratings.
Apple TV will premiere Season 2 on February 27, 2026.
