Netflix’s latest offering, His & Hers, had a fascinating premise and some incredible twists right up to the very end of its six-episode run. One of the major elements that drives the plot forward is a shared trauma between the two leads, Anna Andrews and Jack Harper. It is revealed that they once had a baby, but the baby did not survive. Jack & Anna’s baby, Charlotte’s crib death in His & Hers explained
Throughout His & Hers, it was evident that both Jack and Anna were broken people, grieving over something very deep. It turned out that the former couple did not split because of a lack of love between them, but because they suffered a tremendous loss that changed everything for them.
Jack and Anna’s baby, Charlotte Alice Harper, died as an infant before the events of His & Hers. The murders begin on the anniversary of Charlotte’s death.
While not much was explained about Charlotte’s death, it was established that the baby died while Alice was watching her. The death was attributed to unknown causes related to crib death.
Crib death is a term commonly used for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS. In this, a seemingly healthy baby under one year of age can suddenly die. Multiple factors have been associated with SIDS. It includes smoke exposure and sleep environment, but there is no definitive explanation for most such deaths.
Jon Bernthal explained the impact of the loss in an interview with Tudum, saying, “Ultimately, it really is about this broken relationship between Anna and Jack mending itself.” He added, “They realize the only way to truly mend is to come together. Then you really see how capable this couple can be.”
The storyline surrounding the baby primarily serves to deepen Jack and Anna’s individual character arcs. In the flash-forward at the end of the story, Jack and Anna appear to be repairing their relationship.
