Ever since fans learned about Darren Ritter’s departure from Chicago Fire, they’ve been wondering why he is leaving. The latest episode of the show has finally revealed the reason behind the character’s exit.
Why Daniel Kyri’s Darren Ritter leaving Chicago Fire in Season 14
Darren Ritter, played by Daniel Kyri, has revealed that he is leaving Firehouse 51 in hopes of reuniting with Dwayne in New York City. The October 8 episode of Season 14 gave an update on the relationship, setting the stage for Kyri’s exit.
During the episode, paramedics Violet Mikami and Lizzie Novak receive a text revealing that Dwayne’s surgery had gone well. Further, he is now on the mend. They were also pleased to learn that Ritter would come home soon. Violet also said that she was glad to see Ritter return in light of Firehouse 51 losing some crew members recently.
Later, Violet and Novak meet up with Ritter, who shares what happened during his visit to New York City. Ritter reveals that he met with Dwayne’s family in the hospital, which led to some awkward moments. Ritter blames himself for the incident. He says that it wouldn’t have happened if he had moved in with Dwayne in Chicago.
Violet tells Ritter that he should make things work with Dwayne, advice that he ultimately takes. He calls Dwayne to express how he feels and is elated to learn that Dwayne also regrets the break-up. The couple then decides to patch their relationship and start anew. The episode ends with Lizzie and Violet driving Ritter to the airport, where the trio shares an emotional goodbye.
Actor Daniel Kyri has bid farewell to the character as well, in a heartfelt Instagram post in August 2025. “While I know I may never find another cast and crew as amazing as this one, I intend to carry what I’ve learned from you to every set in the future,” he penned. He concluded the post saying, “Thank you so much, Darren Ritter. And goodbye.”
