Jeremy Renner has spoken candidly about the claims made by his ex-wife, Sonni Pacheco, during their highly publicized divorce and custody battle. Recently, the Hawkeye star opened up about being accused of threats and substance abuse. He discussed how he handled the accusations as well as the public discussion around the controversy.
Jeremy Renner addresses ex-wife’s allegations
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Jeremy Renner responded to allegations made by his ex-wife, Sonni Pacheco, during their divorce and custody dispute in 2019. At the time, Pacheco accused the actor of making threats to kill both her and himself. Renner has consistently denied these claims.
Reflecting on that time, Renner said he often turned to humor and cynicism as a way to get through stress. He shared, “Whatever stress I’ve had in life, I’ve tried to find a way of laughing through it. And that’s where sometimes cynicism comes out — you think, ‘I’m just going to have a laugh at this stuff.’”
When asked to clarify what he was referring to, Renner pointed directly to the allegations made against him. He explained, “Being accused of things you’ve not done, right? That doesn’t feel good to anybody. It certainly doesn’t feel good when you’re a celebrity and it’s known to everybody.”
The Avengers actor confirmed that he was speaking specifically about the accusations made by his ex-wife. He said, “No, and they happen all the time. It’s all the salaciousness that happens out there. It’s clickbait, and it hurts my feelings and it dehumanizes people.” During the interview, Renner also said he largely ignored the public views surrounding the allegations when they first surfaced.
Renner and Pacheco were married for less than a year before they headed for divorce in December 2014. The situation grew more contentious during their custody battle over their daughter, Ava, now 12. According to TMZ, Pacheco alleged that Renner once fired a gun into the ceiling with Ava in the house and also threatened suicide. She also claimed that the actor left drugs within their daughter’s reach. Renner denied all such accusations at the time.
Despite the history, Renner said their relationship has improved, and the former couple now shares joint custody of Ava. He said, “Her mom and I get along very well, and we’re in each other’s lives. It’s lovely.” When asked about his own dating life, the Mayor of Kingstown star confirmed he’s not in a relationship “at the moment.”
