Some viewers are wondering why Remmick was so intent on capturing Sammie in Sinners, especially as the film’s supernatural elements unfold alongside its deeper historical themes. With vampires, music, and spiritual connections woven into the storyline, many were left curious about what made Sammie so important to the antagonist’s plans.
Here’s why Remmick went after Sammie—and how it ties into the heart of Sinners’ ending.

Here’s why Remmick was after Sammie in Sinners’ ending
Remmick targeted Sammie because of his rare and supernatural musical ability. He discovered Sammie by coincidence while fleeing Native Americans and turning Bert and Joan into vampires. Drawn to Sammie’s guitar playing at the juke joint, Remmick recognized that Sammie possessed the unique talent to connect with spirits across time through music.
Remmick believed that this power could help him reach the souls of people he had lost. To access it, he demanded that Sammie be handed over and promised to spare the others in exchange. His motivation was rooted in the belief that Sammie’s music could grant him spiritual reconnection, something he had long sought.
This confrontation unfolded during a night of violence at the newly opened juke joint owned by brothers Smoke and Stack. Although the battle against Remmick and his vampire followers took center stage, the film revealed that the ultimate threat came from a local white supremacist group led by Hogwood. The group returned at dawn, intending to destroy the juke joint and its Black patrons.
The story positioned Remmick’s goals as separate from the racial hatred of the Klansmen. While he was still a predator, Remmick’s desire stemmed from personal loss rather than ideology. In contrast, Hogwood’s posse acted on deeply rooted bigotry, killing innocent people without hesitation.
Smoke eliminated both Remmick and the Klansmen, but was mortally wounded. In his final moments, he envisioned a reunion with his partner Annie and their child. Sammie survived and returned to his father’s church, ultimately continuing his life as a blues musician.
In the mid-credits scene, Stack and Mary, now vampires, appeared alive in 1992. They offered Sammie immortality, but he declined. The post-credits scene showed young Sammie playing guitar, reflecting his enduring connection to music despite the trauma of that night.
