James Cameron’s Avatar franchise is expanding with Avatar 3, aka Avatar: Fire and Ash, introducing new Na’vi clans, including the mysterious and hostile Ash People (Mangkwan Clan). Unlike previous films, where humans were the primary villains, this installment flips the script by presenting a Na’vi faction that opposes Jake Sully and his allies.
Avatar 3’s Ash People aka Mangkwan Clan, explained
Avatar 3’s Mangkwan Clan, or Ash People, is a fierce Na’vi tribe led by Varang, a hardened warrior shaped by tragedy. Once similar to the Omatikaya, their way of life was destroyed when a volcanic eruption ravaged their land, turning their lush hometree into a charred wasteland. This catastrophe left them embittered, rejecting Eywa and nature itself.
Unlike the noble forest Na’vi, the Avatar 3’s Ash People embrace aggression and vengeance. Empire Magazine’s concept art reveals their ash-covered, red-toned appearance, fitting their volcanic environment. Director James Cameron describes them as morally complex, stating, “Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She’s hardened by that. She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil.”
Avatar 3’s Ash People serve as the film’s primary villains, challenging the franchise’s usual “humans vs. Na’vi” dynamic. Early footage from CinemaCon 2025 featured their brutal attack on the Wind Traders, another new Na’vi clan with sky-faring ships. Director Cameron aims to break away from simplistic morality, introducing shades of gray in Avatar 3. The Ash People’s tragic backstory makes them more than just villains—they’re survivors turned ruthless by loss. As Cameron explains, “We’re trying to evolve beyond the ‘all humans are bad, all Na’vi are good’ paradigm.” (via Empire)
The movie is on track to come out in December 2025.
