Legally Blonde Spin-off Series in Development at Amazon MGM

Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine production company are in the process of developing a Legally Blonde spinoff television series.

According to Deadline, project is part of two potential spinoffs in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with one being written by Gossip Girl developers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. That project’s premise is said to be kept under wraps, although Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter are working alongside the duo in developing the series.

While no other series is actively in the works, Deadline notes that Hello Sunshine and Amazon are looking at potentially creating a larger Legally Blonde TV universe, which would feature multiple second spinoff series.

That idea is still described as being in “preliminary” talks though, so there is no real information on them as of yet.

Legally Blonde is one of several franchises Amazon identified for spinoffs

Deadline’s report notes that Legally Blonde was one of several titles that Amazon identified for developing future projects off of after they acquired the MGM library.

Originally released in 2001, Legally Blonde was a romantic comedy film starring Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a sorority girl who becomes a successful laywer from Harvard Law School. A sequel, titled Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde was released in 2003, and a third film has reportedly been in the works for some time now, with Witherspoon recently discussing the project last year.
