The Monkey: Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood Join Theo James in New Stephen King Movie

Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, and more have joined Theo James in The Monkey, a new horror movie based on a Stephen King short story.

Per Deadline, Maslany (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) and Wood (Lord of the Rings) have joined the cast of The Monkey, which wrapped filming approximately one week ago. Along with James (The White Lotus), the film will also star Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth), Colin O’Brien (Dear Edward), Rohan Campbell (The Hard Boys) and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek).

What is The Monkey about?

“In The Monkey, when twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them,” Deadline’s description reads. “The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.”

King’s The Monkey was first published in 1980. It was later revised and republished in Skeleton Crew, a collection of King’s short stories that came out in 1985.

The Monkey is written and directed by Osgood Perkins, the son of Anthony Perkins who previously helmed 2014’s The Blackcoat’s Daughter, 106’s I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, 2020’s Gretel & Hansel. He also directed Longlegs, which releases in theaters this July.

James Wan produces the movie alongside Michael Clear, Jason Cloth, Dave Caplan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Chris Ferguson. Fred Berger, Peter Luo, Nancy Xu, and John Friedberg serve as executive producers.

“Stephen King is the godfather of the horror genre. He had a huge influence on me as a child and throughout my career, and it’s always been a dream to help bring one of his stories to life,” Wan previously said in a statement. “The Monkey is a personal favorite, with its simple, iconic and incredibly marketable conceit. And I can’t imagine anyone better than a visionary and lifelong genre fan like Osgood to bring this to life.”

A release date for The Monkey has not yet been set.
