Dateline NBC plans to re-examine the gruesome murder case of aspiring musician Egypt Covington that took place in June 2017. The episode, titled “A Girl Named Egypt,” will explore details about the slaying and what transpired that night. It would also reveal how multiple men were responsible for the young woman’s murder. The episode will air on the network on Friday, March 22, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET.

On June 23, 2017, police discovered Egypt Covington’s dead body inside her house in the 45000 block of Hull Road in Belleville. According to Click on Detroit (WDIV Local 4), an affiliate of NBC News, authorities found her body bound with holiday string lights. Citing the investigators, the outlet also mentioned that the killer shot the young woman in the head. Finally, three years after the brutal murder, police apprehended two people for Covington’s killing.

As per Oxygen, another man was arrested in connection with the murder of Egypt Covington. The first suspect, Timothy Eugene Moore, was charged with one count of homicide. Meanwhile, authorities charged the second suspect, Shane Evans, with murder and first-degree home invasion. The outlet also mentioned that authorities arrested the third suspect, Shandon Ray Groom, with the same charges as Evans.

How many men were convicted for Covington’s slaying?

During the trial, prosecutors played a video where the police interviewed Evans. He also revealed that Moore and Groom went to the wrong door.

In March 2021, the court announced that investigators had enough evidence to send all three men to trial. According to CBS News, all three suspects pleaded guilty in the murder case of Egypt Covington. The publication also mentioned Moore, Evans, and Groom pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and the court sentenced Evans to 15-25 years in prison. Fox 2 Detroit reported that the judge sentenced Groom to 17-26 years in prison and Moore to 20-55 years.
