David Leitch Explains Why The Fall Guy Is a ‘Love Letter to Stunts’

David Leitch is the perfect director for The Fall Guy. Leitch is a former stunt performer and coordinator, making him the ideal option to direct a film about a stuntman. Initial reviews for The Fall Guy have praised the film’s action, citing its terrific stunt work. And because the film depicts a movie within a movie, Leitch wanted to highlight the stunt community and showcase their importance on a set.

“It was a love letter to stunts,” Letich said at The Fall Guy’s premiere at SXSW (via The Hollywood Reporter). ” We knew we had to be authentic in that world.”

Ryan Gosling, who stars as stuntman Colt Seavers, praised his stunt performer, Logan Holladay, for his work on The Fall Guy. Gosling believes acknowledging the stunt community for their incredible work is long overdue.

“What I love about this movie is in any other film you would never know that but in this one you do,” Gosling said. “It’s an opportunity to finally acknowledge the stunt performers and the incredible contribution that they already make to movies.”

What to Expect in The Fall Guy?

“He’s a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment,” the official synopsis reads. “And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right?”

Besides Gosling, The Fall Guy stars Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, and Stephanie Hsu.

The Fall Guy is directed by Leitch from a screenplay by Drew Pearce. The film is inspired by The Fall Guy television series from the 1980s by Glen A. Larson.

The Fall Guy arrives in theaters on May 3.
