Jason Blum Confirms The Exorcist: Deceiver Is ‘Definitely’ Still Happening After Delay

Jason Blum says there are “definitely” still plans to make another Exorcist movie.

Speaking with The Direct, Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum confirmed that plans for The Exorcist: Deceiver are still in the works.

“We are definitely going to make another Exorcist movie, but I wanted more time to figure out what it would be,” Blum said. “I have no idea what it’s going to be yet.”

What’s happening with Blumhouse’s Exorcist trilogy?

In December 2020, Blumhouse announced that David Gordon Green was developing a new Exorcist movie, The Exorcist: Believer, that would serve as a sequel to William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, which was released in 1973.

In July 2021, it was then reported that Blumhouse had plans to make a whole new trilogy of Exorcist movies.

The Exorcist: Believer was released in United States theaters in October 2023. Directed by Green and produced by Blum, the movie starred Leslie Odom Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia O’Neill, Ellen Burstyn, and Ann Dowd.

The Exorcist: Believer received largely negative reviews from critics and fans upon its release, though it still brought in $137 million at the global box office off of an estimated budget of $30 million.

While Green was initially going to direct the next installment, The Exorcist: Deceiver, he departed the project in January 2024. Universal Pictures then removed the film from its release schedule, as it was initially expected to come out on April 18, 2025. There’s been no word yet as to who will helm The Exorcist: Deceiver following Green’s departure or what the film will look like following the negative reception toward The Exorcist: Believer.

Green, meanwhile, is staying busy as he’s working on a new movie, Nutcrackers, starring Ben Stiller, Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker, and Toby Huss.

The Exorcist: Deceiver does not have a release date at this time.
