Spaceman: Adam Sandler Reveals Why Filming the Netflix Movie Was ‘Tough’

During a recent appearance at a Berlin Film Festival press conference, Uncut Gems star Adam Sandler opened up about his difficult experience filming Netflix’s upcoming Spaceman movie. Since the sci-fi drama will feature Sandler playing an astronaut, the Emmy nominee had to do wire stunts , which left him in pain during production.

“The wires were tough because my body’s not the most flexible body,” Sandler shared (via Variety). “The wires hurt me, they dug into me. The stuntmen who would wire me up every day, I would say ‘that hurts’ and they didn’t believe me. But we did it as a team. [Director] Johan [Renck] would say, ‘You don’t look like you’re floating, what are you doing?’ And then I would say, ‘Well, what should we do?’ And then they’d wire Johan up and he’d be like, ‘More like this!'”

What is Spaceman about?

“Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth,” reads the synopsis. “Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka, he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanuš works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late.”

Based on Jaroslav Kalfar’s 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia, the film is directed by Emmy-wining filmmaker Johan Renck (Chernobyl) from a screenplay written by Colby Day. Joining Sandler are Carey Mulligan, Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, with Isabella Rossellini and Paul Dano. It is produced by Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan, and Michael Parets for Free Association, with Ben Ormand, Renck, and Barry Bernardi serving as executive producers.

Spaceman arrives in select theaters on February 23 followed by its streaming debut on Netflix on March 1, 2024.
