Martin Scorsese on Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar Snub: ‘[His Performance] Will Endure’

Martin Scorsese says Leonardo DiCaprio’s Killers of the Flower Moon performance will “still endure” despite the fact that he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for the role.

Speaking with Variety, Scorsese reacted to Killers of the Flower Moon’s recent Oscar snub for Actor in a Leading Role.

Regarding DiCaprio’s performance, Scorsese said, “He went so far into the complexities and contradictions of a man who was so weak, so malleable, who did such unspeakable things, but who also truly loved his wife. Leo fearlessly created a true Everyman … an Everyman that people just don’t want to acknowledge. So that will endure.”

Lily Gladstone, who plays Mollie Kyle in Killers of the Flower Moon, also said that her parents were “pissed” when they found out that DiCaprio wasn’t nominated. She added, “[DiCaprio] was the first to text me congratulations, with popping confetti. I told him how upset we all were. My nomination is equal parts his. I would not have been able to do what I did without his generosity as an actor and as a human being.”

What Oscar nominations did Killers of the Flower Moon receive?

While it may not have gotten an Actor in a Leading Role Oscar nod, Killers of the Flower Moon still earned Academy Award nominations for Best Picture (Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, Scorsese and Daniel Lupi, Producers), Actor in a Supporting Role (Robert De Niro), Actress in a Leading Role (Gladstone), Cinematography (Rodrigo Prieto), Costume Design (Jacqueline West), Directing (Scorsese), Film Editing (Thelma Schoonmaker), Music (Original Score) (Robbie Robertson), Music (Original Song) (Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People), music and lyrics by Scott George), and Production Design (Jack Fisk and Adam Willis).

The nominees for Actor in a Leading Role, meanwhile, include Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer, and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction.

Killers of the Flower Moon is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
