Jon Bernthal on Playing Punisher in the MCU: ‘If We Do It, We Do It Right’

The Punisher star Jon Bernthal has talked about playing the iconic Marvel antihero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking with Collider, Bernthal delved into why he thinks the character is so popular, stating that he feels “there’s a little bit of Frank Castle in everybody.” The actor then explained how important it is to do justice to Frank Castle by staying true to the source material.

“I think there’s a reason why that character has resonated as deeply and strongly as he hasm” he stated. “In the hearts and minds of comic book fans and first responders and people in the military and people all over the globe. I think there’s a little bit of Frank Castle in everybody. He exists very strongly inside me, and I care about that character deeply.

“I also know that it’s absolutely essential that if we do it, we do it right, and we have real sacred integrity to the source material and to what is at the core of Frank. I’m gonna do my absolute best to make sure that, if and when we do it, we do it right.”

When will Punisher next appear in the MCU?

Last year, it was revealed that Bernthal would return to the role in the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again.

In October 2023, it was reported that Daredevil: Born Again was undergoing a “significant creative reboot” after the production break that came from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman were quietly taken off the project alongside the series’ directors, while certain scenes and episodes that were already finished will be retained with further serialized elements added.
