Annette Bening Joins Cast of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein Movie

Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s untitled Frankenstein movie (previously known as The Bride) is set to begin filming in Q1 for Warner Bros. as Annette Bening joins an already impressive cast.

The Bride Revisited

Bening joins a stellar cast that features Christian Bale as Dr. Frankenstein, Jessie Buckley in an as yet undisclosed, Penelope Cruz and Peter Sarsgaard. Production was originally supposed to begin on March 4 in New York City in the aftermath of Netflix dropping the film and Warner Bros. picking it up.

Bening can currently be seen in the Netflix movie, NYAD, which earned her a Golden Globe and SAG Best Actress nomination. She has been Oscar-nominated on four occasions for Grifters (supporting actress), American Beauty (Lead Actress), Being Julia (Lead Actress), and The Kids Are Alright (Lead Actress).

Gyllenhaal’s film isn’t directly retelling the story of Mary Shelley’s classic, but digging deeper into the lore with an alternative tale where a lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman, and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.

This is Gyllenhaal’s second directorial project after 2021’s The Lost Daughter, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
