Will There Be a San Andreas 2 Release Date & Is It Coming Out?

Directed by Brad Peyton and produced by Beau Flynn, San Andreas is a 2015 disaster film that tells the story of an estranged family trying to survive as catastrophic earthquakes start to happen along the San Andreas Fault. If you are wondering whether there will be a San Andreas 2, this is what we have discovered.

Here’s all the San Andreas 2 release date information we know so far, and all the details on when it is coming out.

Is there a San Andreas 2 release date?

San Andreas 2 does not have an official release date, but it will likely be announced in the future.

The reports about a potential San Andreas sequel first started circulating in 2016. The film, which is supposed to be about the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean, went into development at New Line Cinema, one of the production companies attached to the original project, in February 2016. It was reported that Brad Peyton would return as the director for the sequel and Beau Flynn as producer. Moreover, Neil Widener and Gavin James were brought in to pen the screenplay. Some of the main stars of the original film — Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, and Paul Giamatti — were set to reprise their respective roles, with Johnson also serving as the producer.

Speaking to Collider in July 2021, Daddario revealed that a draft for the prospective film was written but it didn’t lead to anything. “It was mentioned to me several years ago when I went in to New Line,” the actress said. “I don’t think that the exec that I was speaking to is there anymore. But they had a draft written. As far as I know, it’s not happening. It’s been a long time. I don’t think so. I think it was in development at one point, I should say. But that happens in Hollywood all the time.”

Later that year, Johnson told SiriusXM that the reason San Andreas hadn’t gone into production was scheduling conflicts. “There’s a great idea for San Andreas that we had, I think it’s great,” the Black Adam star said. “You know the challenge that we’re having honestly is what you guys said, is scheduling.”

In December 2021, Hiram Garcia, the President of Production at Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, explained to Collider that while Warner Bros. Pictures, the distributor of the original film, wished to make a sequel, their company was busy with other productions. In December 2023, the release of what was presumed to be the official trailer for San Andreas 2 on the Foxstar Media YouTube channel garnered much attention, but this was later confirmed to be fanmade.

It seems that the project continues to be trapped in development limbo. During his appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Giamatti effectively confirmed that the project wasn’t going anywhere at this moment.

As things stand now, it might be a while before San Andreas 2 goes into production, if it gets greenlit, that is. ComingSoon will provide an update if and when the circumstances change.

The official synopsis for San Andreas reads:

“In the aftermath of a massive earthquake in California, a rescue-chopper pilot makes a dangerous journey across the state in order to rescue his estranged daughter.”
