What is Memory about?

“Sylvia is a social worker who leads a simple and structured life,” the synopsis reads. “This is blown open when Saul follows her home from their high school reunion. Their surprise encounter will profoundly impact both of them as they open the door to the past.”

In addition to Chastain, Sarsgaard, and Fisher, Memory (not to be confused with the 2022 Liam Neeson movie of the same name) stars Merritt Wever, Jessica Harper, Brooke Timber, and Josh Charles. Franco produced the movie alongside Eréndira Núñez Larios, Alex Orlovsky, and Duncan Montgomery.

Memory premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival in September 2023. Franco was nominated for the Golden Lion award at the festival, while Sarsgaard won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. The movie was also shown at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival before Ketchup Entertainment purchased the distribution rights to the film in October 2023.

Franco’s past directing credits include 2009’s Daniel & Ana, 2012’s After Lucia, 2015’s Chronic, 2017’s April’s Daughter, 2020’s New Order, 2021’s Sundown, and more. Chastain and Franco have also shot another movie together, Dreams, which also stars Isaac Hernández and Rupert Friend. Dreams does not yet have an office release date.

Memory opens in New York City and Los Angeles on December 22, 2023, before it then expands to wide release on January 5, 2024.
