The Blackening 2 in the Works at Lionsgate

The Blackening 2 is officially in the works, with Variety reporting that Lionsgate and MRC are developing a sequel from the original’s writers.

According to the report, Lionsgate and producer MRC have entered into talks with writers Dewayne Perkins and Tracy Oliver, as well as producer E. Brian Dobbins, to work on a new film. It’s currently unclear whether or not the the film’s director, Tim Story, will be involved, or if any of the cast from the original film will be back.

During its initial theatrical run, The Blackening earned a total gross of $15 million. It also garnered positive reviews from critics, who praised the movie’s sharp story and great cast chemistry.

What is The Blackening About?

“The horror comedy centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer,” reads the synopsis. “Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherfu–in’ game. The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?”

The Blackening is directed and produced by Tim Story from a screenplay co-written by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins. The film stars Antoinette Robertson, Dewayne Perkins, Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, X Mayo, Melvin Gregg, Jermaine Fowler, Yvonne Orji, and Jay Pharoah.

The film is produced by Marcei A. Brown, Jason Clark, E. Brian Dobbins, Tracy Oliver, Tim Story, and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett, with Vicky Story as an associate producer.
