Night of the Ghoul Director on What Drew Him to Scott Snyder Horror Comic

During ComingSoon’s recent chat with The Boogeyman director Rob Savage, there was plenty of talk about projects old and new, including his upcoming adaptation of Scott Snyder’s horror comic Night of the Ghoul.

A New Curse

Asked what about the comic got his attention and made him believe it was primed for movie treatment, Savage responded,

”I’m a huge film buff, and I love the era of movies that he’s harkening back to the classic Universal monster movies. But I’ve always been looking for a curse movie — something that’s in the vein of The Ring. Something where you get a sense of something having been passed onto you like It Follows, and there’s a great sense of claustrophobia and mounting dread that’s in the comic book that comes from such an unusual place.”

Savage feels the mixture will make for a unique movie, ”The idea of combining The Ring with this dark chapter of Hollywood history … it’s such a great way into that type of horror that I’ve never seen before,” he says, ”We’ve got a great — I don’t know if it’s been announced who’s writing that yet — but we’ve got a great writer who’s already turned in a fantastic draft on that. So I’m excited, hopefully, to be shooting that one soon when a deal’s made on the strike front.”

In the Scott Snyder and Francesco Francavilla comic book Night of the Ghoul, A father and son look into the true story behind a long-lost horror film from the golden era of monster movies. But as they dig deeper, they risk unleashing the very thing the supposedly destroyed film had meant to keep hidden.

The movie will be produced by Shawn Levy, Daniel S. Levine, and Dan Cohen who were all involved in Savage’s most recent movie The Boogeyman.
